Bias-Based Policing Policy – Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office
Members of the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office are strictly prohibited from engaging in racial or other bias-based policing.
Bias-based policing is defined as the unreasonable use of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or religion by a law enforcement officer when deciding to initiate an enforcement action. The use of such characteristics is not considered bias-based policing when they are part of a specific and credible suspect description, combined with other identifying factors.
Any individual who believes they have been subjected to bias-based policing by a member of the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office is encouraged to file a complaint. Complaints may be submitted in person, by telephone, or by email to the Office of Professional Standards or to any on-duty supervisor.
All allegations of bias-based policing will be thoroughly investigated by the Office of Professional Standards. Upon completion of the investigation, the individual who filed the complaint will receive a written notification of the findings.
